Spiritual Tonic
Many is the time a patient has asked me to give them a tonic, something to pep them up, give them more energy, and help them with their mood. We live in stressful, fast-moving times. It can be hard to relax and to have much joy in our lives.
The letter from Paul to the Philippians is a good spiritual tonic. Paul was imprisoned at the time he wrote to the Philippians. Despite that and despite all the other trials and tribulations he had experienced, Paul was filled with joy and encouraged the Philippians to be joyful. The letter is a treasure chest of encouragement in the Christian life:
“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life…” (Phil 2:14-16).
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil 4:4).
“I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Phil 4:13).
If you need a tonic to revive your spirit and give you joy, read Philippians tonight and let it speak to your heart, mind, and spirit.
