Get A Checkup
As a doctor, I have always emphasized the importance of getting regular checkups. It’s important for adults to make sure that there aren’t any chronic health issues that have popped up, to screen for potentially deadly cancers, to discuss lifestyle issues, and to generally make sure that everything is going well. Regular checkups are equally important for our pediatric patients, especially for the very youngest of them. Here, we are not so much concerned with chronic illness but rather that the child is growing and developing normally. It always makes me sad when a patient presents with a serious problem that could have been dealt with much easier if they had only come in sooner for a regular checkup.
It’s important for us to have a spiritual checkup once in awhile. There are many different ways to do this. You can attend a retreat, a mission, or another program through your church. You might want to spend some time with a trusted spiritual advisor.
If you aren’t now in a position to do one of these programs, you can do your own spiritual checkup. Find some quiet time and think and pray on your answers to the questions below. May God bless you!
1. 1. Am I growing in my love for God? Do I experience His love and care and see Him working in my life?
2. 2. Is God a priority in my life? How much time am I spending in prayer, worship, study, and service? Does God have a place in my financial and other decisions?
3. 3. How are my relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and others that I come in contact with every day? Are there people I need to forgive and be reconciled with? Do I need to seek forgiveness?
4. 4. Are there areas in my life that are keeping me from being the person I want to be? Am I making any progress in these areas?
5. 5. Am I a good witness to those around me? Do others comment (positively or negatively) about my witness?
