Be Open To The Light

We have some plants that we bring inside for the winter because they won’t survive a freeze. We keep them by an upstairs window so that they get enough light. Every once in a while, I have to turn them because the leaves grow in the direction of the light and the plants look unbalanced.

The plants know instinctively that they need the light in order to grow. The same is true in our own lives. The spirit within us was formed by God. It knows that it needs to be open to the light of God’s Spirit in order to grow. The areas in our life that we keep in the dark, hidden away, will never change. Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them” (Eph 5:8-11).

As we begin this Lenten season, let’s make it a point to open ourselves completely to the Spirit’s light that we may draw closer to God and become more like the people He calls us to be.
