Slow Down

We visited China in 2015. While we were there, we rode what was at the time the world’s fastest train. It reached a maximum speed of 250 miles per hour during our ride.  At that speed, the nearby scenery goes by so fast that everything is just a blur.

The pace of modern society seems to be increasing exponentially. We are surrounded by so many inputs and have so many activities that our lives go by in just a blur. The pace of life can be so frenetic that it robs us of our peace. This can be a major problem because we find God in times of peace. It is hard to hear Him speak to us over the noise of all our activity.

Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha. Martha was busy with all the preparations while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to Him. Martha complained to Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Lk 10:40-42)

Martha had a servant’s heart but, in her busy-ness, she lost sight of Jesus. We likewise can lose sight of Jesus when we are going nonstop without a break. Take time to ask Jesus to show you which things are needed in your life and which are not.

Rest in God today.
