Focus on Jesus

I’m old-fashioned. I have a smartphone that I can take pictures with and I use it once in awhile. When I’m trying to take a nice picture, I prefer to use my old camera. I like being able to manually adjust the focus so that I can bring my subject  into just the right view, although everything else in the background may be a little out of focus.

In life, just as with my old camera, if we really focus on one thing, everything that is not at the center of our focus is going to be a little blurry in our mind. If we focus solely on our job, our family life may suffer.  If we focus only on our worldly ambitions, our spiritual life will suffer.

We are called as Christians to focus on Jesus. When we make it our goal to serve Him and to draw as close as possible to Him, we begin to see more clearly His ways and His call to us. When we focus on Jesus, not only do we see Him more clearly but He brings the rest of our lives into better focus by allowing us to look at them through His eyes.

Peter was able to walk on the water when he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus. When he started to look at the wind and the waves around him, he began to sink. We may find the same thing happening to us. When we take our eyes off of Jesus and get distracted by the problems we face, we can easily be overcome by fear and doubt. If you are in this position, you need to do what Peter did and cry out to Jesus and let Him take your hand.

The author of the letter to the Hebrews wrote,  ”Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…..who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12:2-3).That advice is just as applicable to us, maybe even more so given the times we live in. Let’s make a conscious effort to fix our eyes on Jesus today.
