Walk With Jesus

We are making plans for our annual summer vacation. We will be visiting Madrid and Lisbon as well as making side trips to a few other places in Spain and Portugal. While we are in Madrid, we will be going to see Picasso’s Guernica.  I’m not generally a fan of modern art. I still have the mind of an accountant. I prefer works of art that I can understand rather than those which are subject to multiple interpretations depending on the viewer. Guernica is an exception to me, being one of the most famous anti war paintings in the world.

Just as an artwork can be subject to multiple interpretations, the tapestry of our lives is subject to multiple interpretations as well. During Easter season, we read about the disciples traveling to Emmaus. Jesus came to them, although they didn’t recognize Him. We are told that “They stood still, their faces downcast” (Luke 24:17). They gave their account of the events of Jesus’ death and resurrection, feeling sad and confused. Jesus then “…explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” (Luke 24:27). The disciples recognized Jesus when He broke bread with them, and then He disappeared. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32).

The disciples’ interpretation of events was very limited and incorrect. Jesus needed to show them through His eyes what really happened. We may face the same problem. Events occur that leave us searching for answers. The road ahead may be unclear to us. Our interpretation of the events and direction of our lives may be inaccurate. What do we do? We do what the disciples did - ask Jesus to walk with us for a while, speak to us, and open the Scriptures for us. Through His Holy Spirit, we can see the events of our lives as Jesus sees them. We can take comfort in knowing that He is still in control and that He will provide for us. He will also guide us in the right path.

Let’s walk with Jesus this week.
