Safe Haven From the Storm

I was working along the side of the house last week when I heard a persistent “cheep-cheep-cheep” nearby. I searched around until I found that it was coming from the cable box on the side wall of our house. There was a tiny opening at the bottom of the box where a mama bird had somehow squeezed in and made a nest. A bad storm came through two days ago with wind gusts over 75 miles per hour. Our neighbor’s maple tree fell over and we lost about half of our pecan tree. I checked the cable box nest and the little birdies were still happily cheeping away while mama sparrow watched from nearby.

A couple of thoughts came to mind as I pondered the little sparrows. God will make His home in us if we give Him even the tiniest point of entry. He is eager to be with us and help us on our life’s journey.  This is more than a matter of salvation. We may have areas in our lives that we haven’t been allowing God to enter into. These could include our marriage and other relationships, work and finances, church and service activities, recreation, and habits. God brings light to these areas, allowing us to see where we are and helping us know what to do.

When we take Him into our hearts and lives, God will keep us safe. I know I have said this before, but it seems to bear repeating in these difficult times. The winds may blow, the rain may come down in torrents, everything may look black – but God is and will be our safe haven from the storm. Like the mama sparrow who provides for her little ones who cannot provide for themselves, God will care for us. Jesus used similar language in talking to the people of Jerusalem, “How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings” (Luke 13:34).

Let’s trust in God and be open to His working in every area of our lives.

“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.”  (Psalm 91:2-4)
