Don't Tolerate Sin

I fortunately have only had food poisoning a few times in my life. I think those were some of the worst illnesses I’ve ever had. Once I recovered, even the thought of the offending food made me feel sick. It was a long time before I could even think about eating it again.

It’s interesting that you can become accustomed to that which can make you sick. Visitors to Mexico and Central America will get sick eating the same things that the natives can eat without any problem.

We may have sins or habits that are spiritually poisonous to us. Even the apostle Paul faced the same problem. “For what I do is not the good that I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19). We can always repent and seek forgiveness and healing. The problem comes about when we become so accustomed to our sins that they no longer bother us. The Holy Spirit will help us realize the poisonous nature of our sins and develop a revulsion for them if we are open to His message and His help. The tax collector who was aware of his sins went home forgiven while the self-righteous Pharisee, unaware of his sins, remained in them. (Luke 18:9-14).

Our relationships also can be spiritually poisonous if they draw us away from God. We’ll talk more about that next week.

Let’s ask the Spirit to help us be less tolerant of our sins this week.
