God Is Our Strength

I work out at the gym three times per week and do some exercises at home on a daily basis. I started out with light weights and gradually worked my way up to heavier weights. It’s important for us old folks to do regular strength training exercises because we lose muscle mass as we age.  It’s unreasonable to think that you can maintain your strength without exercising your muscles.

Paul wrote, “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). At first glance, that statement sounds like a contradiction. Paul, though, recognized that God was his strength. When Paul realized that he couldn’t do it by his own abilities and turned to God for help, God provided the strength that he needed to do the work that he was called to do. God told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Trying to make it on our own is a recipe for discouragement, burnout, and failure. When we admit that we are weak, we can turn to God as the source of our strength.  We should be in the habit of daily placing our trust in Him to guide and provide for us. We may find that turning to God with our lesser concerns and seeing how faithful He is makes it easier to trust Him with the heavier burdens of life.

Let’s resolve to exercise our spiritual muscles by trusting in God to guide us and help us in all that we do. May our faith grow stronger as we experience God’s working in our lives.
