Life-Saving
I had some extra training in cardiology as part of my overall medical training. During that time, I watched defibrillators being implanted and tested. A defibrillator is a device attached to the heart that shocks it back to life if the heart goes into a deadly rhythm. I remember being a little anxious when they tested a device by purposely putting a person’s heart into a deadly rhythm and then seeing whether the defibrillator would bring them back. They worked every time! In my medical practice over the years, most of the patients who needed a defibrillator agreed to have one because they knew it could be the difference between life and death. Some declined to have it done, either due to fears about the procedure, concerns about the cost, or their belief that they didn’t need it.
We are all sinners, under the penalty of death if not for the sacrifice of Jesus. The world is seemingly oblivious to the potential danger of being lost for eternity. We need to bring the message that Jesus can take dead hearts and restore them to life, a life of abundance (John 10:10) not just in the world to come but in our day-to-day existence. It is freely available to all who decide to come to Him. Some people will refuse when we bring this message to them. They may not be willing to bear the cost. We can testify that what is gained is far more valuable than any price that is paid. Some will not feel the need, despite what we or anyone else may say. We should be faithful in praying for them and all others in a similar state.
Jesus’ Great Commission wasn’t just a friendly suggestion – it was a command. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). The Spirit will guide us into whatever we should do. We witness to some with our words and others with our lives as we “let our light shine before men” (Matthew 5:16). Prayer for the unsaved should be a priority for us. In addition, we should support those who have devoted their lives to serving God and sharing the Good News with the world.
Let’s resolve to bring our Savior with us into the world each day.
