We Will Reap A Harvest

Our fall garden looks pretty pitiful this year. Lots of little shoots just struggling to hang in there.  I’ve been watering daily and doing the other things you need to do but the abnormally warm temperatures and no rain for over a month seemed to be winning out. I was just about to give up and get ready for next year when I noticed several little tomatoes had started growing. Now we have dozens on our one plant. Hopefully we won’t have an early freeze this year so that we can have some homegrown tomatoes for Thanksgiving.

Paul encouraged the Galatians, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). It can be difficult to carry on day-by-day when we don’t see the results of what we are doing. This is true regardless of the nature of our task. We can take heart in knowing that, when we are doing what God has called us to do, He has promised that we will see a return because it is His work, not ours. No faithful service for the Kingdom will be in vain.

When the farmer brings in the harvest, the benefits flow to everyone who receives a portion of it, including the farmer. When we do God’s work, we can expect to receive a return ourselves, even though we may not fully appreciate it until we are in the presence of the Lord. God is not stingy in His blessings! Our attitude is important – our service should be in thanksgiving to God for all He has done for us, not for what we might get out of it.

Take heart in the promise made to each of us, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them” (Hebrews 6:10).
