Be Active in Your Spiritual Journey
It’s that time of year again! I belong to the local YMCA and every year when I go in early January, most of the equipment is being used by people starting a workout program. By the middle of January, it begins to thin out and by the beginning of February it’s back to baseline.
I’ve seen thousands of patients who come in complaining about their inability to lose weight. Many of them have no interest in doing anything about the problem themselves, such as watching their diet closer and getting regular exercise. They just want me to prescribe something that will do the work for them.
Paul wrote to Timothy, advising him, “But you, man of God, flee from all this [love of money], and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession” (1 Timothy 6:11-12). Notice the words Paul uses – flee, pursue, fight, and take hold. They all involve deliberate and decisive action. We are called to grow in our faith and in good works. We won’t get there by just passively absorbing what is given to us by our pastors and teachers. We must take an active part in our spiritual growth process.
Let’s be diligent in working on our spiritual fitness in the coming year.
