Going Into the Wind

We had a strong cold front pass through the area yesterday and it made for a very windy day, with gusts almost to 50 miles per hour. I was looking out the window as the trees and everything else were feeling the effects of the wind. I noticed a big bird, probably a hawk, just gliding through the air, not flapping its wings, seemingly effortless in its movements, not affected at all by the breeze. I was curious and so I read up on how birds, mainly the larger ones, deal with the wind. They fly into the wind with their wings out and it creates uplift. Then, once they’ve been lifted up, they can point themselves downward, gaining momentum that allows them to move forward, even going into the wind.

We live in turbulent times. We find ourselves being buffeted by the winds of society blowing in the opposite direction from where we want to go. We can learn a lesson from the birds. When we are facing turbulence, we can lift our arms out wide and ask God to lift us up. When He does so, we then put our head down and move forward, getting to work. When we start to lose momentum, we repeat the process.

Isaiah tells us, “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:30-31).

If you’ve been flapping your wings as hard as you can and not getting anywhere, maybe it’s time to give in and soar with the power and grace of God.
