Face to Face
I was thinking back to my college days recently. I
went to school halfway across the country so I didn’t get to see my family from
the time I left in August until I came home for Christmas break. There weren’t
any cell phones back then and long-distance calls were expensive. Still, I
remember calling my parents from time to time, occasionally for some particular
purpose but normally just to hear their voices and share some time with them.
I usually flew home at the end of term. I still
remember walking down the passageway at the airport terminal, trying to catch
the earliest glimpse I could of my parents. I remember how excited I was to see
them and how happy they were to see me. As many times as I came home, I never
lost that joy of first sight.
We will all pass from this life some day. When we
do, we’ll be in heaven and get to see Jesus face-to-face and know that we’ll
never have to say goodbye. Our joy will be complete. In the meantime, we should
“call home” frequently, not for any particular need but just to talk to God and
listen to His voice.
David wrote a psalm of thanks to God, and we can
follow his advice, “Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the
Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always” (1
Chronicles 16:10-11).
