Our Money
I loved to play board games when I was a kid. One of
my favorites was Monopoly. I was thrilled when I got to be the banker and
handle the money but, at the end of the game, I had to put it all back into the
box until next time.
When we look at it from the viewpoint of eternity,
all the money we have now is just Monopoly money. There’s one difference – we go into the box when our days are
over, but the money stays behind! Our
money and all our other possessions are of no value to us when we die, just
something to pass on to someone else. They have no eternal value, except to the
extent that we use them for the benefit of, and under the direction of, God and
His Kingdom.
We are called to distance ourselves from the pursuit
of money for its own sake. Paul advised Timothy, “Godliness with contentment is
great gain…..For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy
6:6, 6:10). There is nothing wrong with working hard to provide for our
families and others – in fact, there is much to be said for productive labor.
We get in trouble when the things we own, own us. Jesus warns us, “You cannot
serve both God and Money” (Matthew 6:24).
David wrote, “The earth is the Lord’s, and
everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). When we view
ourselves as stewards of God’s resources and not owners, we can see our
possessions in their proper perspective.
I’ll talk more about stewardship next week.
