The World's Illusions

As I mentioned previously, we went on a cruise last month. We saw an illusionist show one evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. We’ve been to several illusionist/magician shows over the years and are always amazed at the tricks they perform. I know you can go online and read how a lot of these tricks are done but I’ve never wanted to because that would take the fun and wonder out of them.

During a magic show, it’s fun to be fooled. It’s a different story in everyday life. The powers of this world try to get us to believe an illusion about what we need and what’s really important in life. Happiness is the goal and the way to get there is through success, pleasure, and the accumulation of possessions and power, regardless of what you do to get them. They try to make us believe that only the material matters and that the spiritual is an illusion and is of no consequence.

God holds to the opposite view. John wrote to the early Church, “Everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:16-17).

Let’s take stock of where we are in life, what we are striving for, and what occupies our hearts and minds throughout the day. Let’s focus on serving God each day, not letting the illusions of worldly desires find a place in our hearts.

“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
